The First session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) of 2008 was held from 29 to 31 January at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
This meeting focused on objectives: the election of the Bureau; the set up of three working groups.
The session was opened by the representative of UNESCO's Director-General, Mr Wataru Iwamoto, who introduced the activities of Sport and Physical Education since the last CIGEPS meeting in March 2007.
Mr Kamal Guemmar, Director of the National Institute of Higher Learning, Science and Sport Technology in Algeria was elected President of CIGEPS. Austria, Ecuador, Kenya, Lithuania, Malaysia, and Oman were elected Vice-Presidents, each representing one of the six UNESCO regions.
The new working groups are:
Physical Education and Sport in the Education System;
Sport and Culture;
Sport and Socio-Economic Development.
A specific working group has also been dedicated to the reforms of CIGEPS. This group will be chaired by Cuba.
IATWS will take active part in all activities and proposeto host working group "Sport and Culture" meetings in April in Moscow/Russia, in June in Mariupol/Ukraine and in September in Busan/Korea.
